Korean Sunscreen & MoCRA Regulation

by Team Knours 10 Apr 2025 0 Comments

The flowers are blooming, and April showers make us start smelling the spring, which also means it’s time to get serious about sunscreen.

If you’re like many of our readers, chances are you’re already a fan of Korean sunscreens - known for their smooth textures, lightweight feel, and skin-friendly formulations. But you may have also heard about the recent changes in the cosmetic landscape with the introduction of the MoCRA (Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act), which has had a notable impact on Korean skincare brands, particularly their sunscreen products.

Many beloved Korean sunscreens available in the U.S. are now undergoing reformulation to comply with FDA regulations - sparking concerns among consumers. Will the texture change? Will it start to sting the eyes? These are valid questions, given how much texture and sensorial experience matter when it comes to sunscreen.

One of the most noticeable differences you’ll find between Korean sunscreens sold in Korea vs. the U.S. is in the labeling. In Korea, sunscreens often display a PA rating system (indicating UVA protection), a standard widely used across Asia. In contrast, U.S. sunscreens are labeled “Broad Spectrum,” meaning they protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Beyond labeling, texture tends to be the biggest difference - largely because of the more limited range of UV filters approved for use in the U.S., as well as restrictions on their percentages. This can sometimes lead to sunscreens with thicker textures or different finishes compared to their Asian counterparts.

Still, despite these shifts, Korean sunscreen formulas that meet FDA standards continue to be a favorite among skincare lovers in the U.S. - thanks to their thoughtful formulation approach and user-friendly experience. Soko Glam dives deeper into this topic in this video:

With that in mind, we’re excited to introduce KOOLSOL, Knours' newest sunscreen line, created with the U.S. consumer in mind. The line includes both an absorbent sunscreen and a mineral sunscreen, giving you options based on your skin type and preferences.

To break it down simply:

  • Absorbent Sunscreen tends to offer a more skincare-like texture and is a favorite for those who wear makeup or prefer a more lightweight, invisible finish.

  • Mineral sunscreen relies on zinc oxide, a physical UV filter that forms a protective barrier on the skin’s surface to help reflect UV rays. It’s often favored by those with sensitive or reactive skin, as it’s generally less likely to cause irritation compared to chemical filters. An added benefit is its reef-safe profile, making it a more environmentally conscious choice. While zinc oxide is traditionally known for leaving a white cast, KOOLSOL’s mineral sunscreen is thoughtfully formulated to minimize this effect - balancing the optimum protective dose of zinc oxide with skin-caring ingredients that help the formula blend more seamlessly into the skin.

Based on early feedback from our community, makeup wearers are leaning toward the Broad Spectrum sunscreen for its seamless finish, while those with sensitive or reactive skin are loving the mineral version for its gentle, soothing protection.
